It’s always good to hear from Akwaaba Music, my favorite African Music label. They have an amazing discography, which is helping to spread African music along with some other labels. But, the best thing about Akwaaba is, apart from crate digging and releasing gems from the rich African music history, they are also releasing new things from all around Africa.
This time they’re gonna release a new project, Mabiisi, from Burkina Fasso’s renowned rapper Art Melody (if you don’t know him yet check his previous albums Wogdog Blues and Moogho. personal fave from him: Yamb Sabaab) and Ghanaian musician Steve Atambire who is playing Kologo. A perfect mixture of traditional music with new leanings. Art Melody’s tshirt on the video sums it all up, Africa is the Future.
You may all think Africa is our past, but thanks to Akwaaba Music we can now see clearly, Africa is also our present and future.
With their discoesque techy-house sound, Just A Band greetz us again. They released their second album from Akwaaba Music last month and till that day, they became one of my favorites.
Their sound can be described as a blend of Daft Punk, Air, etc.(French touch), Basement Jaxx, and even Goldfrapp and Terranova; or better, like Benjamin said: “Think Stevie Wonder landing in Versailles (home to Phoenix, Daft Punk, Air) – singing in English and Swahili”.
Personal favorites are Extra, Kai Ridho, Migingo Express and Usinibore.
Stream the whole album and watch the video of the first single, Usinibore. Then, you may all go and grab it. This is one of the best albums released last month.
When our friend Benjamin from Akwaaba Music sent this gem, I was really impressed with the music of Malian musician Iba Diabaté, Abdoulaye Diabaté‘s son, but I can’t find any time to post something about it.It’s hard to describe his music but what I felt and heared when listening to his music is the sound of every roots and rootsy genres that I’ve ever loved.Still having no time for a deep review, I can at least post his music here.It should be enough to be possessed by his music.
As the African Cup of Nations 2010 started this week, nothing will be better than a kuduro album to celebrate it.Benjamin Lebrave from Akwaaba Music sent me this album last week, which is due to be released on 12th of January from iTunes.Well, I can say this is one of the best kuduro albums I’ve listened so far.
Killamu is part of the kuduro scene for 10 years, and he is one of the names that contribute to the development of the genre. He explains it all in the video below.
The best thing about this album is, it is not limited to classic kuduro sounds, you can feel the kizomba and semba flavors troughout the album.Even, while listening to Vai Con Calma you may think Carlos Lamartine visited Killamu in his studio, and while he was there, they made this magnificent song.Another thing that makes this album special is, Killamu cannot stop himself from experimenting on his music that we are not familiar to hear from other kudurists.
Do not neglect this pure and sometimes aggressive energy rising from the streets of Luanda. If you have no idea about kuduro and music of Angola this album will be a good start for you.First listen to the mixtape below and then go get it when it’s released.
Artik Turkce yazmicam demistim ama dayanamadim.Yukardakinin birebir cevirisi degil ama idare edin iste.Skylife styla..
Luandadan bizi selamlayan Killamu 10 senedir kuduro sahnesinde yeralip gelismesine katkida bulunan isimlerden.
Gecen Agustosta, eski/yeni afrika muzikleri uzerine yogunlamis Akwaaba Music, Carlos Lamartine‘in kayitlarini topladiklari 20 sarkilik Histórias da Casa Velha albumunu cikartmisti.Ben buyuk salaklik yaparak, sonra bakarim diye albumu dinlemeyi erteleyip duruyordum.Mersennenin, undomondoda albumu ovmesine, dinamodaki son radyo sovlarinda calip akabinde gene bolca ovmesine resmen kulagimi tikamisim.Buyuk hata!!
Dun gayet kotu baslayan gunume hangi sarkiyla baslayacagimi bilemezken, Benjaminden gelen mail uzerine, eh artik dinleyeyim dedim.Tutuldum.2 gundur pek baska birsey dinleyemiyorum.
50lerden beridir muzik yapan Carlos Lamartinein kayitlarini gecen mayista Angolaya yaptiklari ziyarette toparlamislar.Angola nin bagimsizlik mucadelesinin onemli seserinden biri olan Carlos Lamartine, sarkilarinda mucadelelerini anlatirken, arkadan akan muthis semba ritmleri mest etti beni.
Benim gibi ertelemeyin bu albumu, muhakkak dinleyin.Simdi Akwaabanin bay Lamartinele yaptigi roportaja bakalim ki daha iyi anlayin neden bahsettigimi:
